DIY Moving vs. Hiring Professional Movers: How Rising Fuel Costs Change the Math
When planning a move, many people assume that renting a moving truck or making several trips in their own vehicles will automatically be the more affordable option.
But once you add up mileage, fuel, rental costs, equipment, time, and the number of trips required to move an entire household, the difference between a DIY move and hiring professional movers may be smaller than you expect.
And with fuel prices rising across North Carolina, transportation costs are becoming an even bigger part of that equation.
Fuel Prices Are Affecting Everyone — Including Moving Companies
Earlier this year, Levi spoke with ABC11 about the impact rising diesel prices were having on local businesses.
At the time, diesel in North Carolina had climbed to approximately $4.69 per gallon. Levi explained that Box Turtle could spend around $500 on fuel during a slower week and two to three times that amount during a busy week, depending on how far crews were traveling.
Fuel prices have continued to rise since then. As of October 1, 2026, AAA reports the average price of diesel in North Carolina at approximately $6.08 per gallon, while regular gasoline averages approximately $4.07 per gallon.
For moving companies, fuel is obviously part of the cost of operating large trucks.
But those same fuel prices also affect people trying to complete a move themselves.
The Cost of a DIY Move Goes Beyond the Truck Rental
A moving truck advertisement may show an attractive base rental price, but that typically isn't the entire cost of the move.
Depending on the rental, you may also be paying for:
Mileage
Fuel
Rental coverage or protection
Dollies and other moving equipment
Moving blankets
Additional rental time
Taxes and fees
For example, we recently saw a local U-Haul rate of approximately $1.29 per mile.
At that rate, putting just 70 miles on the truck would add about $90 in mileage charges alone — before paying for the truck rental itself or putting fuel back into the tank.
And 70 miles can accumulate faster than you might think.
You may need to drive to the rental location, bring the truck to your current home, drive to your new home, make another trip if everything doesn't fit, return the truck, and then get yourself back home.
For a move across Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Apex, Chapel Hill, or the surrounding Triangle area, those additional miles can quickly add up.
Moving With Personal Vehicles Can Mean More Trips Than You Expect
Some people skip the rental truck altogether and plan to move using pickup trucks, SUVs, cars, or help from friends and family.
That can work for a very small move.
For an entire household, however, vehicle capacity becomes a major factor.
Think about how much space items such as these actually require:
A sofa. Mattresses. Bed frames. Dressers. Dining tables. Chairs. TVs. Desks. Patio furniture. Garage items. And dozens of boxes.
A professional moving truck can transport a significant portion of a household in one trip.
Trying to move the same amount using personal vehicles may require trip after trip between the two homes.
If your new home is 20 miles away and you make five round trips, that's already roughly 200 miles of driving.
At today's fuel prices, those miles are no longer insignificant.
And fuel isn't the only consideration.
Every additional trip also adds time to your moving day.
Your Time Has Value Too
Fuel and mileage are easy to calculate.
Time is harder to put a price on.
A DIY move often includes much more than simply driving from one home to another.
You may need to:
Pick up the rental truck.
Drive it back to your home.
Figure out how to safely load everything.
Recruit friends or family to help.
Carry furniture and boxes.
Make additional trips.
Unload everything.
Refuel the truck.
Return the rental.
Then drive yourself back home.
Something that initially appears to save money can easily turn into an entire day — or an entire weekend — of work.
Professional movers are doing something very different.
An experienced moving crew arrives with a large truck, moving equipment, furniture blankets, and people who move furniture every day.
Instead of spending hours figuring out how to get a sectional through a doorway or how to safely carry a dresser downstairs, the goal is to move the household as efficiently as possible.
One Truck Can Replace A Lot of Car Trips
This is one of the biggest advantages of hiring a professional moving company that is often overlooked.
Moving trucks are designed to move homes.
Personal vehicles aren't.
A 26-foot moving truck can consolidate what might otherwise require numerous trips with pickup trucks, SUVs, or cars.
That means fewer miles driven between properties and significantly less back-and-forth throughout the day.
For local moves in the Raleigh-Durham area, that efficiency can matter even more when you're dealing with traffic, apartment access, elevators, parking restrictions, or longer distances between homes.
The question isn't simply:
"How much does it cost to rent a truck?"
A better question is:
"What will it actually take to complete my entire move?"
DIY Moving Can Still Make Sense
Hiring movers isn't necessarily the right choice for every situation.
If you're moving a small number of belongings, relocating a few miles away, or already have access to a truck and plenty of help, handling the move yourself may make sense.
But for larger moves, it's worth comparing the entire cost instead of only looking at the initial rental price.
Consider:
Rental cost + mileage + fuel + equipment + number of trips + time + labor
Then compare that with the cost of having a professional crew complete the move.
The difference may not be as large as it first appears.
Professional Moving Is About More Than Transportation
There is also an important distinction between renting a truck and hiring a moving company.
With a rental truck, you're paying primarily for access to the vehicle.
With professional movers, you're paying for the truck and the people required to complete the move.
At Box Turtle Moving Company, our crews handle the heavy lifting, loading, transportation, and unloading so customers don't have to coordinate a moving truck and recruit their own moving crew.
That can be especially valuable for larger homes, heavy furniture, stairs, long walking distances, and moves where completing everything efficiently matters.
